Live by your rules, not your frightened brother.

Live By Your Own Rules

When I first started doing digital marketing, I was talking with my brother, who encouraged me to “get a job” and pay into social security (USA) so when I’m old I can (now I’m paraphrasing) live on too little, too late.

I’ve been self-employed for decades, and I haven’t paid enough into that system to even cover groceries in my old age. This would mean I’d be working until I d.i.e. to supplement my SSI.

After some discussion about why I’ve chosen the path that I have, and why I wouldn’t be getting a J.O.B., I said to him, you can either plan to live abundantly or you can plan to scrape by. To which he said, nobody ever plans to be poor.

Isn’t that what his suggestion means, though?

To me, paying into a system that is designed to keep you working until you’re elderly, then keep you living on a small amount (that doesn’t keep up with the cost of living) until the end of life sounds a lot like planning to be poor. And stressed, and limited.

Sure, I could get a J.O.B. with benefits, working for someone else. This would require that I give up my day-to-day freedom, agree to a limited hourly wage, and retire ‘someday’ on someone else’s terms. It’s the option that most people believe to be normal and ‘safe’.

A J.O.B. Just Isn’t For Me.

Planning to be free and unlimited on my own terms… now that is goal worth pursuing.

Stop going without! Stop worrying about the utility bill. Stop buying the low quality foods, putting things back on the shelf, or taking a calculator to the store. And stop wondering if social security will be there when you reach that age.
